Why was throwing a banana at Roberto Carlos during a match considered racism?

At a match between Krylia Sovetov Samara and Anzhi Makhachkala in the Russian Premier League, a fan threw a banana at Roberto Carlos. News was then talking about it being a 'racist abuse' etc. so did Carlos himself. I don't understand why it's racist? please explain
