When do I ask (or how do I find out) about tips?

I've got my induction for a job as a waitress in a while, and am nervous! I've never been a waitress before. I just wondered how tips work. Are they always for the waiter / waitress? or should I ask the manager today what to do with the tips? I don't really want to ask because it'll seem like I'm just working for the money.
